MAREK SAHI ELECTED AS NEW ATHLETES REPRESENTATIVE FOR VANUATU PARALYMPIC COMMITTEE
Marek Sahi has been elected as the new Vanuatu Paralympic Committee (VPC) Athletes Representative as the VPC’s recent Annual General Meeting.
Marek competes as a Short Stature athlete in shot put, javelin and discus. Marek travelled with the VPC Team to the GAPS Camp in Birmingham United Kingdom in the lead-up to the 2022 Commonwealth Games. GAPS is the acronym for “Gather, Adjust, Prepare, Sustain.” The GAPS Camp saw Marek receive her international classification as F40, training with elite parathletic squads and competition with other international teams from around the world attending the GAPS Camp. Marek threw 5.32 metres in Ambulant Shotput and 12.45 metres in Ambulant Discus.
Marek, works for the Vanuatu Society for People with Disability (VSDD) as an Early Intervention Teacher in VSPD’s Community-Based Inclusive Development Program, providing twice-weekly early intervention classes to children aged 0-6 years, contributing to child related research projects, strengthening partnerships with partner organisations and building the capacity of caregivers to complete skills development activities within the home environment. As well, Marek assists by organising parent training, transportation, and child health events.
The VPC held its AGM on Thursday 1st June at VASANOC Haos. Marek had already been elected unanimously by the VPC Committee at a Committee Meeting 27th February but VPCs Constitution requires confirmation of appointments to the Board at an AGM. So this merely reconfirmed the unanimous support for Marek to serve on the Committee where her knowledge of issues facing Ni-Vanuatu with a disability will be very valuable,” commented Margaret Macfarlane, VPCs President.
Unfortunately there are no Short Stature F40 events in the Pacific Games, so the VPC is looking for international competitions for Marek to travel to early in 2024 as the lead up for selection for the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games.
